Housing free of discrimination is a right and an opportunity.  It is a right protected by state and federal laws.  Housing free of discrimination gives you and your family a chance to concentrate on living and building a stable future.  Housing literally opens the door to so many opportunities.  Where you live often determines the quality of education your children receive, the employment options and health services you enjoy, the availability of day care, and access to business associations.

Equal opportunity for housing is the American way.

The Fair Housing Council is Here For You

The Fair Housing Council is here to ensure that all who seek housing have an equal opportunity to rent, purchase, finance or insure the property they choose.  Fair Housing is the law of the land.  Fair housing means that you may freely choose a place of residence without regard to your race, religion, color, sex, national origin, or because you are disabled or have children in your family.  It is your right to be treated in an equal and non-discriminatory manner.

The Fair Housing Act Prohibits Discrimination

The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination based on any of the following factors:

  • Race
  • National Origin
  • Religion
  • Sex
  • Familial Status
  • Handicap

The Fair Housing Act also prohibits anyone from doing the following:

Threaten, coerce, intimidate or interfere with anyone exercising a fair housing right or assisting others who exercise that right.

Advertise or make any statement that indicates a limitation or preference based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status or handicap.  If you feel that you have been discriminated against in your search for housing based on any of the above, please contact us immediately via phone, in person, (our telephone number and address is at the top of the screen), or e-mail us.

Housing and Referral Services

The Fair Housing Council offers assistance to people who are looking for housing.   While we are not landlords or real estate brokers, we assist our clients in trying to locate housing.  In addition, we refer clients to agencies that may be able to help them if they have special needs.  for more information on these services, please call us at 201.489.3552 and ask to speak to one of our housing counselors.

Volunteers sought

The Fair Housing Council of Northern New Jersey is seeking volunteers to assist in gathering information about housing practices in New Jersey. A diverse group of dependable, conscientious individuals are needed. Training is provided and volunteers are paid a stipend. Assignments are on a per diem basis.
