BEWARE OF "STEERING"

Have you heard any of the following statements during your housing search?

"You wouldn't want to live in that side of town."

"We can't rent a second floor apartment to you because you have children."

"The units in the back are much more quieter than the ones facing the street."

If so, you may have been "steered."

"STEERING" is defined as a method used by housing providers in rental or sales to  segregate within a community, neighborhood or development.

The following unlawful steering practices include but are not limited to:

  1. Discouraging any person from inspecting, purchase or renting a dwelling because of  race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin.

  2. Exaggerating drawbacks or failing to inform any person of desirable features of a dwelling of a community, neighborhood or development.

  3. Communicating to any prospective purchaser or renter that he or she would not be comfortable or compatible with existing residents of a community, neighborhood, or development because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin.

  4. Assigning any person to a particular section of a community, neighborhood or development, or to a particular floor of a building, because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin.
